headspace, Australia’s National Mental Health foundation for young people, chose STORM training as part of the School Support programme. The programme, a federally funded initiative, helps ‘school communities respond to and recover from suicide’ by offering Gatekeeper training and support services.

headspace staff received the full STORM training to become Facilitators, and delivered an adapted version to School staff. The training, delivered over 2-days, covered Suicide Assessment, Safety Planning, and Suicide Postvention (a precursor to headspace’s suicide preparation and response resource).

Following a successful pilot study (in publication) in a 12-month period between June 2013-2014, headspace trained in excess of 1000 Secondary School support staff across Australia. This is testament to a committed approach to suicide prevention and postvention. Schools have reported that they are using the skills daily to help and support students. As a result of this success, headspace commissioned a further six staff to become STORM Facilitators.
