FAQs

You and your team. Enhancing suicide prevention, postvention and self-harm mitigation skills will help you and your team help and support those in distress.

We appreciate that each team or organisation is different. The flexibility of the training sessions allows us to contextualise the content and approach to meet the specific learning needs of most professional groups and areas of work. Examples of where we have done this are:

  • Defence Forces
  • Veterans services
  • Higher Education (University)

We have also specifically adapted the STORM® training to produce packages for those working with:

  • Children and Young Adults
  • Prisoners

For a small group or small to medium organisation, with six to sixty staff requiring training, we suggest a Direct-to-Participant package would be the most suitable delivery option.

The Direct-to-Participant package is where we provide your Organisation with a Consultant to deliver the training session(s) directly to your team(s).

However, some customers may prefer a cascade model (Train the Facilitator) of delivery. Please contact us to discuss which option is best for your team.

Currently STORM® has a library of 7 skills based modules which can be combined in different ways to meet the needs of your team(s).  Combinations can be 1 day, 2 days or 3 days in duration.

  • Module 1: Suicide Prevention - Assessment of Risk*
  • Module 2: Suicide Prevention - Safety Planning*
  • Module 3: Suicide Prevention - Problem Solving
  • Module 4: Suicide prevention - Future Safety Planning
  • Module 5: Self-Injury Mitigation - Assessment of Risk
  • Module 6: Self-Injury Mitigation - Safety Planning
  • Module 7: Suicide Postvention

*This module is core to any STORM® training session

The most common combinations of these modules form 1-day, 2-day or 3-day training sessions. Examples of Standard STORM® Skills Training Training Sessions are:

  • 1-day Suicide Prevention Training Session – Modules 1 & 2
  • 2-day Suicide Prevention Training Session – Modules 1 to 4.
  • 2-day Self Harm Mitigation Training Session – Modules 1, 2, 5 & 6
  • 2-day Suicide Prevention and Postvention Training Session – modules 1, 2 & 7
  • 3-day Complete Self-harm Mitigation Training Session – Modules 1 to 6 (with the option for module 7 delivered in an extended day)

Having knowledge about a topic does not automatically mean you have the skills to apply that knowledge effectively. It takes a skills-based approach to make a difference. For example, knowing the key elements of effective listening doesn’t mean to say that you have the attributes to be a good listener. Learning to be a good listener needs skills that take practice. STORM® Skills Training Sessions bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. Focusing on the skills required to engage and compassionately communicate with people in distress through a skills-based approach.

To make sure that we are flexible and responsive to your needs, we offer a bespoke option. Increasingly, our customers are telling us that they have a broader range of educational and training needs. Perhaps they are commissioning for a large area covering different agencies, professional groups and job-roles, or the organisation has a complex and diverse workforce. Some customers have asked for a combination of short 2-hour educational workshops to raise awareness for some of their staff, and STORM® training sessions for others.

We offer a bespoke education and training service to help plan, develop and deliver skills-based training or education workshops that are at the right level and context for your workforce.

Whilst doing ‘something’ to help someone in distress is valuable and important, doing something with a sound evidence base can have greater benefit. The strength of STORM®, is that our workshops have been shown, by academic research, to be effective in in developing & enhancing skills, improving attitudes and increasing confidence in helping someone in distress. Our Evidence speaks for itself.
At STORM®, we believe that no one should profit from another person’s distress.   As a not-for-profit social business, we reinvest our surplus income into expanding our social impact.  In addition to building on our success with the creation of new and updated programmes, we run a number of Community Engagement programmes with a focus on suicide and self-harm.   Investing in STORM® is investing in social impact and value for you, your staff, your service users and across the community.   Learn more about our Community Engagement Program.    [
